Gesture and Line Exhibition

The show includes an exciting variety of artworks by four post-war German and Austrian artists. I really enjoyed the works on display and the way they highlight contemporary approaches to drawing. There are a wide range of techniques and methods of mark making, using line, space and form in the show and this felt like an exciting and progressive move away from more traditional drawing practise. Artists in the show include Rudi Tröger, Hermann Nitsch, Karl Bohrmann and Carl-Heinz Wegert.

‘Untitled, June 1991’ by Karl Bohrmann

This collage depicts an architectural form using bright, pink paper and charcoal drawing. I loved the great sense of space and the angular sides of the building.

‘Poem 30/7/78, 1978’ by Carl-Heinz Wegert

‘Poem 30/7/78’ is a delicate drawing made over an existing photograph. The graceful lines are combined with a hand written poem.

‘Untitled (Garden undergrowth), 1960-70’ by Rudi Tröger

An expressive and energetic drawing by Rudi Tröger. There is something a bit dark and wild about this work.

‘Untitled from the series The Architecture of the Orgies Mysteries Theatre, 1985-90’ by Hermann Nitsch

This is a strange, scientific looking diagram covered by red fingerprints. The drawing mimics actions from Nitsch’s infamous performances which used blood as a medium.
